The 2016 Pulitzer Prizes were announced today. The Pulitzer Prize for Music was awarded to composer Henry Threadgill's In for a Penny, In for a Pound. Also of note to music fans: the Broadway musical Hamilton, an acclaimed retelling of the Founding Father's story, won the prize for drama.
Reviewing Threadgill's winning release last June, the New York Times wrote that "Henry Threadgill, who at 71 is still a blazingly original composer, bandleader, alto saxophonist and flutist, favors prickly elegance and structural rigor, along with endless mutability." The winning composition was released as a two-disc suite that balances improvisation with composed elements.
Hamilton, which opened on Broadway last year, has become perhaps the Great White Way's hottest ticket of the 21st century. Earning widespread critical acclaim and making a celebrity out of its creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show has also won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album, and cast members have been invited to the White House for a live-streamed performance.
