Composer Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson had an unusual, varied and important career. Born in New York City in 1932, he was named after Afro-British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. In college, he met composer Igor Stravinsky and developed an interest in jazz and popular music. He later became one of the founders of the first racially integrated orchestra in the United States. Throughout his career, Perkinson advocated for the Black community, especially its performing artists.
