Slow and mournful and otherworldly, Claude Debussy's "Syrinx" recounts the story of Pan and his passion for the beautiful nymph Syrinx.
Trying to escape Pan's advances Syrinx begged the gods for help.
Granting her request, they turned her into a stand of reeds. Broken-hearted, Pan fashioned these reeds into an instrument that expressed the pain of his loss.
Julia Bogorad-Kogan, Principal Flute of the SPCO, performs this haunting work in this week's Regional Spotlight.
