Dr. Lynn Martin challenges his nurses with questions about music. Saint-Saens 'Carnival of the Animals' will be playing in the OR helping the team get in the zone and he might say "I need the scalpel - oh, and which animal is Saint-Saens presenting here?"
Lynn grew up in rural Wisconsin and has always loved classical music. He even took three grueling years of piano after medical school to see if maybe he were an undiscovered prodigy.
The answer, sadly, was no.
But he is a successful plastic surgeon who has music with him just about everywhere he goes whether it's at work, at home, in the car or in his head as he trains for yet another Birkebeiner or participates in hard-core bicycling camp.
Lynn played trombone all through middle school and when he went off to college, he expanded his interest by taking music appreciation and attending as many classical concerts as he could at the Union Theatre in Madison.
This led to the purchase of lots of recordings and then a romance with a professional classical flutist - Sharon - who is now his wife.
He stopped by the MPR studios after they both attended one of many Minnesota Orchestra coffee concerts. He shares a playlist that reflects the many years of listening to Classical MPR and coming upon surprises that just stopped him in his tracks with a truly "wow" moment - he calls the list "Gifts from MPR."
