"The sea has been a constant in my life," says composer Alex Shapiro. "Had I not been a musician, I might have become a marine biologist."
Shapiro's fascination with the seas and the life contained in it led to a new work that was premiered this past February at the U of M. "Immersion for Symphonic Band" is in three movements and makes free use of electronic sound. A gorgeous water scape, the piece moves easily, fluidly, from section to section.
In the Regional Spotlight this week is the University of Minnesota Symphonic Wind Band led by Jerry Luckhardt in Alex Shapiro's "Immersion for Symphonic Band."
Regional Spotlight airs Thursday at 3 p.m. on Classical MPR stations and web stream.
