Pushkin, the Russian Shakespeare at Park Square

In Russia, they call him "our everything" - Russia's greatest poet, Alexander Pushkin.

He was an aristocrat, the great grandson of Abram Hannibal, Peter the Great's African page who eventually became a high-ranking Russian General.
 
And also a romantic - or Don Juan, depending on your perspective.

Pushkin was equal parts rebel and dandy. He stood up for his honor fighting handily 29 duels until the last one which ended his life when he was only 37.

Pushkin's legacy is in reclaiming the Russian language at a time when the Czar's court spoke French. His poetry captured the imagination of every Russian composer who couldn't help but set these words to music. 

This Sunday evening, Park Square Theatre brings the spirit of Russia's Shakespeare alive with music, drama, dance and storytelling. Park Square's new Executive Director Michael-jon Pease plays Pushkin and stopped by to share some of his lines as well as some music with us.

When Alexander Pushkin was a child, he would curl up in his grandmother's big knitting basket and listen to her tell stories and fairy tales. Park Square Theatre celebrates their annual Russian Seasons with story-telling, dance and music all inspired by the poetry of Russia's Shakespeare.
