Guitarist Eva Beneke grew up in East Berlin during the last years of the German Democratic Republic, or East Germany as it was called in the U.S. She says that because it was a socialist nation, it was also a largely secular one. As a result, Beneke remembers changing lyrics to Christmas carols or altering concerts depending on what party officials might be in the audience. Nevertheless, Christmas celebrations and performances were a central of her childhood.
