In 1940 Sister Martina Hughes (1902-1982), a member of the faculty of the College of St Scholastica (CSS) in Duluth set Alfred Noyes' poem "The Highwayman" for chorus and orchestra. The piece won first place that year in the Minnesota Composer's Competition of the State Federation of Music Clubs. Time Magazine wrote about the Duluth performance in June of 1941. "The Highwayman" was performed last October as part of the CSS Centennial celebration. Shelly Gruskin led the Cambiata Series Orchestra with the Twin Ports Choral Project and St Scholastica Concert Choir. It's a privilege to bring you this performance on Classical MPR.
