For our new weekly feature, "Moveable Feast," Rachel Hutton of Minnesota Monthly joins John Birge to talk about where to go and what to eat in destinations Classical MPR listeners may be interested in visiting.
This week on Moveable Feast, John and Rachel are looking north to Duluth in anticipation of the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra's season opener this weekend.
Beer
Duluth has a rich brewing history, and its craft brewing industry is booming right now. In fact, Mayor Don Ness recently declared Duluth the "brewing capital of the state" for this very reason!
Lake Superior Brewing is a Duluth institution, and it makes great beer. Rachel personally recommends the Kayak Kölsch, a crisp German-style beer.
Fitger's Brewshouse is another Duluth landmark. It serves a large variety of beers, and also offers beer flights and growlers.
In fact, there are so many craft brews to choose from that we could do a daily update! Your best bet is to head to Duluth and explore.
Post-concert eats
For some food to go with your local beer (or more local beer to go with your food), head to Tycoons Alehouse & Eatery. Located right in downtown Duluth in the Old City Hall, this new restaurant and bar is owned by Fitger's and serves a variety of pub food. Be sure to also check out its cool basement Rathskeller.
If you are feeling like venturing to Superior, Wis, after the concert, Thirsty Pagan Brewing is another good option.
Rachel Hutton covers food and travel at Minnesota Monthly.
