Every weekday morning at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call them Morning Glories.
This week on Morning Glories, we're featuring five fantastic new releases of music for orchestra and soloists — some familiar, some more obscure.
Monday
Franz Joseph Haydn: Violin Concerto No. 4
Aisslinn Nosky, violin; Handel and Haydn Society; Harry Christophers, conductor
This energetic recording from the Handel and Haydn Society features their concertmaster, Aisslinn Nosky, in an elegant and delicate performance of one of Haydn's four violin concertos.
Tuesday
Carl Reinecke: Flute Concerto
Sharon Bezaly, flute; Residentie Orchestra of the Hague; Neeme Jarvi, conductor
Seasoned player Sharon Bezaly's latest disc is like a layered dessert of flute beauty: two of the major flute concertos make up the rich cake layers, frosted between with velvety melodies by Chaminade and Griffes, and a spirited rendition of "Flight of the Bumblebee" is the sweet cherry on top.
Wednesday
Josef Myslivecek: Cello Concerto
Wendy Warner, cello; Camerata Chicago; Drostan Hall, conductor
Famous in 18th-century Italy for his operas, much of Myslivecek's music is relatively unknown today. This cello concerto, originally written for violin, echoes his works for the stage in the cello's virtuosic and lyrical melodies.
Thursday
Vagn Holmboe: Violin Concerto No. 2
Erik Heide, violin; Norrkoping Symphony Orchsetra; Dima Slobodeniouk, conductor
Nordic composer Vagn Holmboe drew inspiration for his works from the stark landscapes of Scandinavia and the folk music of eastern Europe, creating music that shimmers with icy melodies and fiery dances.
Friday
Paul Hindemith: Violin Concerto
Midori, violin; North German Radio Symphony Orchestra; Christoph Eschenbach, conductor
Not one to shy away from challenging violin repertoire, Midori tackles Hindemith's difficult concerto, turning in a mature reading of this passionate and tuneful piece.
