For our new weekly feature, "Moveable Feast," Rachel Hutton of Minnesota Monthly joins John Birge to talk about where to go and what to eat in destinations Classical MPR listeners may be interested in visiting.
It's Education Minnesota weekend (still widely known as "MEA"), so this week on Moveable Feast, John and Rachel talk about places where foodies can take their kids for a meal.
One place Rachel recommends is the Midtown Global Market in South Minneapolis. Located just off the Greenway, it's a place families can choose to bike to. The Midtown Global Market has a collection of small-restaurant kiosks, and the offerings are diverse, including the Left-Handed Cook's Asian-influenced menu or Sonora Grill's Mexican specialities.
The Midtown Global Market also has plenty of space for kids to run around and explore.
John asks about that kid favorite, pizza, and Rachel suggests foodies can visit any of the creative pizzerias throughout the Twin Cities, including such places as Pizzeria Lola, Hello Pizza, Blacksheep Pizza or Punch Pizza. Rachel says these restaurants strike the right casual-yet-foodie balance. Adults can enjoy gourmet food, including beer and wine, while the kids are happily eating pizza.
Finally, the restaurants operated by local group Blue Plate Restaurant Company (Highland Grill, Longfellow Grill, 3 Squares and others) capture the essence of the American urban diner while offering a broad, family-friendly menu. For example, Rachel points out that while grownups are enjoying whisky and oysters on the half-shell, kids can tuck into a big plate of mac and cheese.
