For our new weekly feature, "Moveable Feast," Rachel Hutton of Minnesota Monthly joins John Birge to talk about food topics in which Classical MPR listeners may be interested. As Thanksgiving approaches, John and Rachel discuss where to get good eats for your Thanksgiving dinner.
Because Thanksgiving traces its roots to European harvest festivals, this week's Moveable Feast looks at the local harvest. Here are ways to bring Minnesota foods to your Thanksgiving table.
For a heritage turkey, Rachel suggests ordering from local co-ops and farmers markets.
Minnesota's vegetation brings an array of bounty to the Thanksgiving feast, including local cranberries, wild rice, and pecan pie made with Minnesota maple syrup.
The fruit of the vine also transitions nicely from the plate to the glass, with local vintage Marquette from Parley Lake Winery in Waconia, Minn. For non-oenophiles — or more specifically, for beer fans — Rachel suggests Chestnut Hill nut-brown ale from Stillwater, Minn., microbrewery Lift Bridge Brewing Company.
