For our new weekly feature, "Moveable Feast," Rachel Hutton of Minnesota Monthly joins John Birge to talk about food topics in which Classical MPR listeners may be interested.
Thanksgiving just happened yesterday, and John isn't ready to think about more food just yet, but Rachel points out that a lot of people use this day after Thanksgiving to go shopping — and they'll likely burn a lot of calories as they do it.
For hungry shoppers, Rachel says that the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn., has a nice mix of restaurant tenants. A long-standing restaurant at the MOA is the Napa Valley Grill; some people may think of it as rather staid, but Rachel has noticed that its menu is more creative than people think. For example, the last time Rachel ate there, she dined on ostrich.
The Mall of America has also welcomed its own branches of food establishments from the Twin Cities. Masu sushi, located in Northeast Minneapolis, has opened a satellite location in the Mall of America and has been able to transfer the same energy from its urban location to the mall. Similarly, Cupcake, located in St. Paul, Minn., has brought its home-baked confections to Mall of America.
John says he prefers to stay away from malls on the so-called "Black Friday," so Rachel has some tips on where to go out but find an oasis from mall madness. The North Loop in Minneapolis, for example, has a number of delightful boutiques to interest shoppers, and when it comes time to refuel, Rachel recommends Sapor for its globally influenced menu and its overall relaxed vibe.
