I'm a trumpet player. I used to be, anyway. But man, do I love the clarinet.
In 2012, the block I live on celebrated National Night Out, and I met Rena Kraut.
Rena happens to be a clarinet player (she teaches, too), so naturally, we talked quite a bit about music. Once Learning to Listen started, I knew I wanted her on the show to talk about music for clarinet.
It's impossible to talk about the history of the clarinet without mentioning Mozart. You'll also hear from Carl Maria von Weber, Johannes Brahms, Ludwig van Beethoven — even Alberto Ginastera.
Be sure to check out the playlists here. You can hear a Clarinet Sonata by Brahms or the gorgeous clarinet solo in the 3rd movement of Rachmaninoff's 2nd Symphony.
