Every weekday morning at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call these works Morning Glories.
It's going to be a waltz-filled week, between the New Year's Day concert from Vienna, and Learning to Listen, devoted to the waltzes of Strauss. On Morning Glories, we'll take a look at some other composers who have been beguiled by three-quarter time.
Monday
Schubert: 12 Noble Waltzes, D. 969 Despite their rather grand title, these waltzes conjure up an intimate world of domestic music-making.
Tuesday
(noon hour) Prokofiev: Waltz Suite This suite drawn from Prokofiev's stage works includes a "New Year's Eve Waltz."
Wednesday
(noon hour) Moross: Variations on a Waltz This year marked the centennial of Jerome Moross (1913-83). Here's his playful look at waltz time.
Thursday
Brahms: Waltzes Op. 39 Everyone recognizes the little waltz excerpted from Brahms's Op. 39 — today we'll hear the whole piece.
Friday
Ravel: La Valse With its driving, or overdriving energy, this may be the waltz to end all waltzes.
