Moveable Feast is the weekly feature in which John Birge and Minnesota Monthly's Rachel Hutton talk about where to go and what to eat in Minnesota. This week, John and Rachel discuss Valentine's Day dining options.
Rachel thinks St. Paul trumps Minneapolis for a classic, romantic vibe. Take, for instance, W.A. Frost, Forepaughs and Meritage; all are charming, occupy historic spaces with fireplaces — plus Meritage has an oyster bar.
Minneapolis offers a different type of romance. Barbette, for example, has a bohemian vibe, a cosy atmosphere and relaxed lighting.
A romantic getaway in the area is Canoe Bay in Chetek, Wis., although at this point, you may need to make reservations for Valentine's 2015. Canoe Bay is a secluded retreat that is serene and relaxed. It has a couples vibe — it's not for children — and it has a fabulous restaurant.
But the moral of this week's Moveable Feast is that the restaurant doesn't matter as long as real romance is in the air. Rachel describes how her parents accidentally ended up at the old Pearson's Restaurant in Edina, Minn., for Valentine's Day one year, and even though they were surrounded by people eating liver and onions, their marriage is strong enough that they had a great time.
