For our weekly feature, "Moveable Feast," Rachel Hutton of Minnesota Monthly joins John Birge to talk about where to go and what to eat in Minnesota.
There are two reasons to be happy today: 1) It's Friday; and 2) Spring arrived yesterday. The landscape may not appear very springlike, but that didn't stop John and Rachel from thinking about seasonal foods.
For seasonal items, look to restaurants that have seasonally changing menus, places like Heartland in St. Paul or Corner Table in south Minneapolis.
Realistically, however, it's a little early for local produce — the Mill City Farmers' Market, for example, is continuing to host its indoor winter markets until April 12.
But one spring food date to get on your radar is the Black Forest Inn's Spargelfest, a celebration of asparagus that starts May 23 and runs for a week.
Germans love their asparagus — green, white — so Black Forest runs a full special menu that includes everything from asparagus with ham to asparagus flan to asparagus and rhubarb strudel for dessert.
