For our weekly feature, "Moveable Feast," Rachel Hutton of Minnesota Monthly joins John Birge to talk about where to go and what to eat in Minnesota.
This time of year means March Madness basketball. And what better to pair with that than a good-tasting craft beer? That's why John and Rachel discuss Minnesota's craft-beer industry on this week's Moveable Feast.
The craft beer scene is positively booming in Minnesota. Summit and Schell's put down the foundation of the state's craft-beer industry, and then it really took off with Surly Brewing Co. of Brooklyn Center, Minn.; its bold, super-hoppy Surly Furious was the catalyst to subsequent growth, showing light-beer drinkers a new alternative and making craft beer more mainstream.
The Surly Bill, which passed last year, made it easier for craft brewers to open taprooms, which gave brewers another revenue source and way to market their beers to consumers.
One could spend an entire day drinking your way though Northeast Minneapolis. Some favorite stops include Indeed, Dangerous Man and 612 Brewing. And Surly hopes to open the biggest destination brewery with a big beer garden, event space, restaurant, yet later this year in the Prospect Park neighborhood in Minneapolis.
