Watch the video! Repeating for emphasis: watch the video!! Because if you don't watch the video, you won't know what you're missing. That's because Minnesota Opera's new Magic Flute is not merely a new production; it's a brand-new way of putting opera on a stage.
The stage itself is becomes a fantastic cartoon movie, with the singers immersed in this surreal world. A world that's part Tim Burton movie, part Buster Keaton silent film, and part Georges Méliès (remember the movie Hugo?)
This world is perfect for Magic Flute, itself is a comic fairy tale, filled with witches and spirits and spiders. And yet for all the innovation and fantasy, the pure beauty of Mozart's original music remains pristine. We heard some of it sung by cast members Jesse Blumberg and Tracey Engleman, and learn more about this splendid offering from Artistic Director Dale Johnson.
