For our weekly feature, "Moveable Feast," Rachel Hutton of Minnesota Monthly joins John Birge to talk about where to go and what to eat in Minnesota.
In Minnesota, the walleye may be our state fish, but most of what you find in restaurants and in supermarkets comes from fisheries in Canada. That's because in Minnesota, most commercial walleye fishing has been limited to protect stock for sport fishing.
A notable exception is Red Lake Fisheries. After overfishing totally decimated walleye populations in Red Lake in the 1980s, the Red Lake Nation worked with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to restock the supply, and it now runs a small commercial walleye processing plant — the only one like it in the country. Red Lake Fisheries sells to restaurants, but individuals can buy in person or by mail order.
If one wants to dine on walleye, John suggests visiting Tavern on Grand in St. Paul. Rachel, meanwhile, recommends Blackbird Café at 38th and Nicollet in Minnepolis, where she says the walleye Po' Boy sandwich is delightful.
