For our weekly feature, "Moveable Feast," Rachel Hutton of Minnesota Monthly joins John Birge to talk about where to go and what to eat in Minnesota.
This week, John and Rachel discuss some of the Midwest's island getaways — and the restaurants one can find while off the mainland.
The Apostle Islands are located along Lake Superior's South Shore, and Madeline Island — near Bayfield, Wis. — is the largest and most developed of them. If you go to Madeline Island, the Beach Club in La Pointe is a casual bar that serves a great Lake Superior fish fry; Rachel recommends the whitefish or lake trout. For something a bit more upscale on Madeline Island, try the Pub or Café Seiche.
A bit further south, near Spooner, Wis., one can find Stout's Island Lodge. It's an Adirondack-style lodge and cabins built by a lumber baron a century ago, and it has a nice dining room that serves contemporary fare (Rachel's tip? The fish tacos).
And right in Minneapolis, one can find the Nicollet Island Inn. It serves an extravagant five-course brunch that's great for special occasions.
When it comes to island getaways, just avoid any "three-hour tours" aboard a certain S.S. Minnow …
