For our weekly feature Moveable Feast, John Birge and Minnesota Monthly's Rachel Hutton talk about where to go and what to eat in Minnesota.
Lowertown, situated in the eastern end of downtown St. Paul, is a happening place. The Saint Paul Saints ballpark opens there next year, and this weekend, the Concrete and Grass Festival returns to Lowertown's Mears Park.
John asks Rachel what's new in Lowertown, and here's what she has to say:
"The newest thing happening in Lowertown is the arrival of Bedlam Theatre, which opened this summer. It used to be over on the West Bank, and it has developed a reputation for doing radical, collaborative, community-oriented, avant-garde performances.
"The theater also serves food, and it takes its cuisine seriously. There's a menu of casual fare: salads, sandwiches and hot dogs. But it's pretty creative and pretty broad — it serves sides of both French fries and kale. I'm curious to try zucchini croquettes and the fried cauliflower tossed in maple buffalo sauce. Bedlam also has a hot dog topped with kimchee and another covered with Hot Cheetos and Takis, riffing on that song by the Kids from North Minneapolis."
The Concrete and Grass Festival happens this weekend and features free performances in Mears Park by the Minnesota Opera and by the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.
Also note that Bedlam Theatre is the new venue for the Schubert Club Mix series in October.
