After 25 seasons as Principal Clarinet of the Minnesota Orchestra, Burt Hara joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic as Associate Principal Clarinet in 2013.

Back in town to play concerts with the Minnesota Chamber Society and with his former ensemble, the Minnesota Orchestra, clarinetist Burt Hara stops by Classical MPR to talk to Alison Young about life in L.A. and about his visit to the Twin Cities this weekend.

Hara shares an anecdote from his days as a student at Hollywood High School, when he raised his hand to ask the mayor about why they didn't have more mass transit in Los Angeles. Today, Hara bikes to a train from his home in Los Angeles and takes it to the Walt Disney Concert hall for rehearsals. Evidently Hara has not only taken his lovely clarinet playing (and self) to L.A., but he's also brought with him a little bit of Minnesota bike-friendliness! Listen to the full audio to hear our complete conversation.

Burt Hara performs with the Minnesota Orchestra at Lake Harriet on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 3 p.m., and with the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota at Sundin Music Hall in St. Paul, Minn., also on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m.
