One of the first things we do as human beings is vocalize. As babies we cry, giggle, and coo quite naturally, usually with natural and proper breath support.
Soon most of us learn how to sing, too, but as we grow up we typically don't support our singing voices as well as we once did our infant crying voices. This deprives us of not only beautiful sound and expansive breath and beautiful sound — essentials of artful and healthy singing — but also the nimbleness to express words that convey a song's or a choral work's meaning.
Singing is a natural act, and with a few basic practices, we can establish the foundation for a lifetime of the joy and richness it brings ourselves and others.
The earlier the better: the Class Notes™ video How To Sing Well was created for teachers to help their young singers discover their own vocal instruments and abilities. Noted tenor and conductor Tesfa Wondemagenehu, manager of APM's Choral Works Initiative, interacts with the vocalists of the noted early music group the Mirandola Ensemble to demonstrate effective and ineffective ways to sing.
