This week and next mark the 50th anniversary of a number of baby-boomer TV icons, including Gilligan's Island, The Munsters, and Bewitched. Boomers are living longer, eating better, and have the most time and disposable income of any generation. How does that affect the foodie universe?
They're a huge consumer bloc and any time consumers are demanding better-quality food, that's a good thing. Today, they are contributing to the growth in the local and organic food markets, sustainably-grown food, the craft beer movement, and the booming restaurant scene.
In addition, as the Boomers are retiring they have more time to devote to cooking--they have more time to food shop and are supporting farmers markets and co-ops, while sometimes parents of young children are more inclined to buy groceries at SuperTarget for convenience. They also have more time to dine out and to tell their friends about new restaurants they've visited.
