This season, we've added a new twist to Music with Minnesotans, the a weekly series that airs Tuesdays at 5 p.m., in which Steve Staruch brings in various Minnesotans to talk about the classical music that moves them.
The new twist helps extend your involvement in the show. At the end of each episode, you're invited to suggest a piece of music to the week's Music with Minnesotans guest, based on his or her playlist. Send us your ideas that answer the question: What else do you think this person might like?
Grant Johnson, who was our first Music with Minnesotans guest this season, received a suggestion from listener Dan Wascoe, who just happens to be our Music with Minnesotans guest this week. (That's purely coincidental — you don't have to be a guest on the show to submit an idea.)
After hearing Grant's playlist and his conversation with Steve Staruch, Dan got in touch with this suggestion:
"As a devotee of choral music and big finishes, Grant might appreciate the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's version of 'Come, Come Ye Saints.' Even a budding scientist can appreciate those rousing final chords."
We got in touch with Grant and forwarded the suggestion, which sounds like this:
After listening to the music, Grant had this to say:
"I loved the droning bass notes at the beginning, they almost created an 'instrumental' sound with their tone. Then when the men take over the melody, the organ takes over the droning part, thus an actual 'instrumental' sound is created. I loved the continuous crescendo throughout the entire piece; it really had a nice build to the dramatic finish. I thank the listener who suggested this piece for me."
Be sure to check Music with Minnesotans on Tuesday evenings at 5 to hear each guest's playlist, or check it out on classicalmpr.org. After listening, send us your suggestions and we'll pass them on and share the guest's reaction, just as we did with Grant Johnson.
Listen to Music with Minnesotans, hosted by Steve Staruch, each Tuesday at 5 p.m. All programs are also posted online on classicalmpr.org.
