This past summer, I was able to tour with Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies (GTCYS) to Spain, as well as with the National Youth Orchestra across the United Staes with David Robertson (conductor) and Gil Shaham (soloist), along with locals Emma Richman, Arjun Ganguly and Liam Smith! It was an incredible experience, getting to connect with an orchestra of incredible people while travelling from coast-to-coast, and sharing our love for music with people from all over the U.S.
I've had dreams of becoming a conductor since 5th or 6th grade, so I will be spending some time on that during my undergraduate studies, and move on to my Masters and PhD. As much as I hope to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic someday, I would also love to visit the Congo to teach and to conduct the Kinshasha Symphony, and to visit many other parts of the world. I think it's important that music should be shared with everyone, and combining mission work with music would be my greatest achievement.
My best memory of the Minnesota Varsity experience was the Showcase Concert at the Fitzgerald Theater. Not only was I able to perform with my best friends (the Luna String Quartet) and get to know other fabulous musicians that we had only heard of on the radio, but we were able to share our love of music with a live radio-broadcast audience and a live theater audience. Our quartet always feeds off of the vibes we receive from audiences, and we felt a great amount of energy from that particular audience that night. We had the time of our lives during our performance of Mendelssohn, and later, during our rendition of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. We couldn't keep the smiles off of our faces!
