Most food that we consider to be "scary" is really just food that is unfamiliar to us. For example, at markets in France, you can purchase horsemeat. In Vietnam, it's not out of the ordinary to see little plates of brains for sale. But the foods that we actually need to be fearful of are those foods that are being contaminated with things like eColi and salmonella, and highly processed foods that are unhealthy for our bodies. There are ads running that call junk food the 'cigarettes of our generation'. It seems to be turning into the public-health issue of the decade.
If you'd like to think more about that subject, there's an interesting fictional book by a Minnesota author that came out in August of this year (it was recently plugged on Comedy Central's The Colbert Report). It's called "Sweetness #9," and the story revolves around a food scientist who helped develop a chemical additive — number 9 — that contributes to America's obesity epidemic and causes all sorts of health issues. It's a work of fiction, but the fact that it doesn't seem that far from reality makes it truly frightening.
