Every weekday at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call these works Morning Glories.

This week, we shine the spotlight on the orchestral instruments that make music by the bowing and plucking of strings: violin, viola, cello, double bass and harp. Listen in, and check out our online video on the string family!

Monday

Sibelius: Violin Concerto
Jean Sibelius wrote only one concerto — but he made it a memorable one.

Tuesday

Walton: Viola Concerto
Sir William Walton knew just how to exploit the distinctive, rich tones of the viola in this 1929 concerto.

Wednesday

Haydn: Cello Concerto No. 2
This concerto lay undiscovered till well into the 20th century; now it's a standard for cellists.

Thursday

Dittersdorf: Double Bass Concerto
This concerto, by one of Beethoven's teachers, gives the double bass a rare opportunity to step into the spotlight.

Friday

Boieldieu: Harp Concerto
Francois Boieldieu lived in the first part of the 19th century. Mainly an opera composer, he also left this concerto to harpists.
