Every weekday at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call these works Morning Glories.
Now that it's January, orchestras and concert presenters are putting away the holiday decorations, and getting ready for what feels like the second half of the season. The offerings are varied and bountiful. This week, we'll offer a small preview of events in our region in coming months.
Monday
Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 18 ("Hunt")
Pianist Joyce Yang appears this month with the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra. The Beethoven performance we'll hear comes from a Minnesota recital she gave in 2009.
Tuesday
Bach: Violin Concerto No. 2
In March, violinist Pekka Kuusisto will be performing in St. Paul in as part of Rock the Ordway — a three-week celebration of the Ordway's new concert hall.
Wednesday
Moszkowski: Piano Concerto in E
An out-of-the-way concerto, with soloist Matti Raekallio; he'll be coming to our region later this month, to appear in Fargo-Moorhead's community-wide BeethovenFest.
Thursday
Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto
Gil Shaham, one of classical music's superstars, visits Orchestra Hall in February, when he'll offer one of his signature pieces, the concerto by Erich Wolfgang Korngold.
Friday
Handel: Utrecht Jubilate
The Choir of St. Paul's Cathedral in London is coming to St. Paul, Minnesota in April. Here the Choir performs music of Handel, first sung in their cathedral home over 300 years ago.
