Every weekday at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call these works Morning Glories.
What with cold temperatures and months of winter yet to go, a lot of people are dreaming about a getaway of some kind. On this week's Morning Glories, we'll hear from five composers who traveled to far-away spots, either in real life or in their imaginations.
Monday
Rameau: Prologue from Les Indes Galantes ("Hunt")
Evoking foreign lands in music has always had a special appeal for French composers. Here's Baroque master Jean-Philippe Rameau writing about "the gallant Indies."
Tuesday
Delius: Florida Suite
When Frederick Delius went to Florida, it was a work trip — he managed an orange grove there — but he also managed to collect some musical impressions.
Wednesday
Tchaikovsky: Souvenir de Florence
According to the title, this piece is a souvenir of Tchaikovsky's stay in Italy. But he couldn't restrain himself from including some Russian sounds as well.
Thursday
Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No. 5 ("Egyptian")
Saint-Saëns was a world traveler, and wrote this concerto during a trip to Luxor in Egypt.
Friday
Respighi: Brazilian Impressions
Respighi's memories of a trip to Brazil included a visit to a "snake garden" (a reptile research center). In this suite, you'll hear the snakes!
