In 1981, American composer Joseph Schwantner was asked to write a piece of music to honor Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Schwantner used excerpts from Dr. King's speeches to accompany the resulting score, which he called New Morning For The World: "Daybreak Of Freedom."
On our Martin Luther King Day show, Schwantner discusses the unusual choice of narrator for the premiere performance: Pittsburgh Pirate's Hall-of-Famer Willie Stargell.
Over time, this piece has become a centerpiece for orchestras who wish to honor Dr. King. Maya Angelou, James Earl Jones, William Warfield, and many others have read King's words as part of the performance. But even though Schwantner thinks Willie Stargell's initial narration was great, there was another narration that, in his opinion, was even more special.
Listen above to hear more about that special performance, and watch a live performance of New Morning For The World: "Daybreak Of Freedom" below.
