Every weekday at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call these works Morning Glories.
This week on Morning Glories, we'll place the members of the brass family front and center. We'll hear each of the four principal brass instruments of the orchestra in its solo capacity, and bring them together, with a work for brass band.
Monday
Hummel: Trumpet Concerto
Johann Nepomuk Hummel was a virtuoso pianist, but his best-known composition is this work, one of the standards of the trumpet repertoire.
Tuesday
Strauss: Horn Concerto No. 2
Richard Strauss knew a lot about the horn — his father was one of the great horn players of his day. This concerto is one of Strauss's "Indian summer" works, written in his late 70s.
Wednesday
Bourgeois: Trombone Concerto
British composer Derek Bourgeois is something of a brass specialist. He's written dozens of works featuring brass, including this 1988 concerto.
Thursday
Vaughan Williams: Tuba Concerto
The tuba is the bass member of the brass family — here it gets a chance to step out from its usual supporting role and take the lead.
Friday
Holst: Moorside Suite
Holst wrote his suite for a brass band competition. The melodies may evoke the moorsides of rural England — but they are not folk songs, but Holst's own creations.
