Minnesota Orchestra to play at Carnegie Hall in 2016

The Minnesota Orchestra has a new performance scheduled for Carnegie Hall in New York. The orchestra's loss of Carnegie concerts during the 16-month lockout was a pivotal moment of the dispute, and caused the resignation of Music Director Osmo Vänskä.

Orchestra President Kevin Smith says the invitation to play Carnegie on March 3, 2016, is a huge vote of confidence. The orchestra will perform the Sibelius Symphonies No. 1 and No. 3, as well as Sibelius's violin concerto, featuring soloist Hilary Hahn. "There clearly is a strong understanding that this orchestra is back and its playing well, and it's an orchestra that should be playing at that cherished venue," Smith says.

Smith says he expects more invitations in the future. "It doesn't mean that we will be there every year. We actually have all kinds of other touring ideas that we are exploring as well, but I think that there is a very strong relationship that will have us coming back on a regular basis," he says.

The Orchestra also recently announced it will resume and complete recording of all the Sibelius symphonies.
