There have been many versions of 'Kismet' since it was first introduced as an Edward Knoblauch play (no music) in 1911. In the 1920s, there were a couple of film versions produced in Britain. Another film version of the play was produced in 1944 by MGM studios, starring Ronald Colman, Marlene Dietrich.
In 1953, it became a big Broadway hit for Alfred Drake and company, at which point MGM bought the rights and in 1955, turned it into a movie. That incarnation starred Howard Keel — an actor who had a reputation for doing Alfred Drake roles.
On this week's Flicks in Five, Lynne Warfel discusses the 1955 musical film version of 'Kismet'. We'll hear some of Borodin's melodies, and a song featuring cast members Howard Keel, Ann Blyth, and Vic Damone.
