Learning to Listen: Jean Sibelius

Jean Sibelius was a Finnish composer and violinist of the late Romantic and early-modern periods. Born Dec. 8, 1865, Sibelius is widely recognized as Finland's greatest composer and, through his music, is often credited with having helped Finland to develop a national identity during its struggle for independence from Russia.

On this week's Learning to Listen, we'll explore the life and music of Jean Sibelius. Andrea's special guest this week is Sara Pajunen, a Finnish-born violinist who now lives in Minneapolis.

The core of Sibelius's oeuvre is his set of seven symphonies. In addition to his symphonies, Sibelius's best-known compositions include Finlandia, the Karelia Suite, Valse triste, the Violin Concerto, the choral symphony Kullervo, and The Swan of Tuonela (from the Lemminkäinen Suite).
