Instrument: Piano
Hometown: Edina, Minn.
Piece: Franz Liszt — Concert Etude No. 2 "La leggierezza"
Why did you choose this piece?
I chose this piece for its very elegant simplicity. The groups of six notes beginning the piece form a really compelling and haunting motif, that recurs throughout, as Liszt twists and turns the melody through so many different keys and harmonies. Even though there is a lot of virtuosic passagework, it's not just for showing off: it evolves naturally from the main theme at the beginning.
