John Barry was born "John Barry Prendergast" in 1933. He's probably best known as the composer for 11 of the James Bond film scores — between 1963 and 1987. He also arranged and performed the James Bond theme for Dr. No in 1962. He went on to write scores for Midnight Cowboy, Out of Africa, and many others.
He has received numerous awards for his work, including five Oscars — two for Born Free, and one for The Lion in Winter, Out of Africa, and 1990's Dances with Wolves. On this week's Flicks in Five, we'll hear some of Barry's Oscar-winning score from that film.
