It's a comic satire of Hollywood, Broadway, and the whole cult of glamour and celebrity. It's full of great music by Kurt Weill (Threepenny Opera), an unusually psychological story by playwright Moss Hart (You Can't Take it With You), and witty lyrics by Ira Gershwin (a zillion George Gershwin songs).
It tackled taboo topics when it premiered in 1941. But after two years as a hit on Broadway, Lady in the Dark disappeared into the shadows.
This week, University of Minnesota Opera Theater puts the show back in the spotlight. Director David Walsh came to illuminate this new production, with cast members Jennifer LeDoux performing the show's most beautiful song, and Sullie Ojala-Helmbolt singing the show's funniest song.
Performances run April 14 to 17 at Ted Mann Concert Hall on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus.
