Dressing up male actors as women (and making it believable) is a tradition that goes back to Greek theatre. Hollywood made some big money on films such as Billy Wilder's Some Like it Hot, and Tootsie, starring Dustin Hoffman.
But perhaps one of the most heartwarming and favorite of all those cross-dressing movies is 1993's Mrs. Doubtfire. The film stars Pierce Brosnan, Sally Field, and Robin Williams, who won a Best Actor Golden Globe for his role as a San Francisco freelance voice actor who quits his job over a questionable script, suffers a bitter divorce, then disguises himself as a female housekeeper to spend time with his children.
At one point during filming, Williams insisted on making sure the makeup for Mrs. Euphegenia Doubtfire was believable, so he walked the streets of San Francisco in full makeup and costume — no one recognized him.
This week on Flicks in Five, we'll hear some of Howard Shore's music from Mrs. Doubtfire.
