Ron Howard was born into a showbiz family in Duncan, Okla. — his mother (Jean) was an actress, his father (Rance) was a director, writer, and actor. It seemed he was destined to find himself in the same line of work.
Howard started out as a child actor, coming to prominence as Opie Taylor in The Andy Griffith Show. He followed that with a role as Richie Cunningham on Happy Days. After six years, he left that show to focus on a career as a director — with films including Cocoon, Apollo 13, and A Beautiful Mind, for which he won a 2002 Oscar for Best Director.
On this week's Flicks in Five, we'll hear music from James Horner's memorable soundtrack to Apollo 13.
