By 1816, Beethoven's deafness was profound. He communicated with friends via a small notebook. At this same time, Beethoven's music expression had grown more intimate, more inward. The score of his Piano Sonata No. 28 is marked with phrases like, "with innermost sensibility" and "slow and longingly."
Pianist Roman Rabinovich plays just like that. The result is stellar. His performance from a Frederic Chopin Society recital given this Spring is in this week's Regional Spotlight.
