Flicks in Five: Dances with Wolves

Flicks in Five: Dances with Wolves

Summertime is definitely vacation time, and maybe you're planning a holiday in one of our great national parks. If so, you probably already know that this year is the 100th anniversary of the creation of the National Park Service.

There are a number of films that have been made in our national parks, including 1991's Dances with Wolves. This movie certainly made use of our national parks, particularly in South Dakota. This is the film that changed Kevin Costner's career — both as an actor and director — and also changed the role of Westerns in American film history.

Named to the National Film Registry as a "culturally and historically significant film", Dances with Wolves also won seven Oscars. Filmed in South Dakota and Wyoming, much of the dialogue was in Lakota with English subtitles.

This week on Flicks in Five, we hear John Barry's Oscar-winning score.
