In May, the Minnesota Opera presented the world premiere of Paul Moravec's opera The Shining, based on the 1977 novel by Stephen King. The sold-out run won global acclaim for Moravec's thrilling music, Mark Campbell's moving libretto, and powerful performances by the vocalists and orchestra. Holders of one of those few tickets have been the only ones to hear this contemporary classic — until now.
Starting at 1 p.m. on Halloween, Oct. 31, we'll offer listeners the opportunity to hear streaming audio of an entire performance of the opera, recorded during its premiere run at St. Paul's Ordway Center for the Performing Arts. In cooperation with the Minnesota Opera, we'll make the audio available for on-demand streaming for a limited time: one month, to be exact.
We'll also have a scene-by-scene guide to the opera, with production photos. This opera will not be broadcast on air, due to its strong language. The audio will be available here, at classicalmpr.org.
After you've been chilled by The Shining, stay in that Halloween mood with our annual countdown of "creepy classics." Vote now for your favorite classics that fit the seasonal mood.
