Andrea Bocelli to cameo in his own biopic

The inspiring true story of Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli is coming to a theater near you, in the form of a biopic that will include a cameo by the singer himself.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, The Music of Silence is now being filmed in Rome. The biopic is based on Bocelli's 2002 memoir of the same name, with Game of Thrones’ Toby Sebastian starring as "Amos Bardi," a character based on Bocelli and Antonio Banderas co-starring as the young man's maestro. Bocelli himself filmed a cameo for the film, in which he'll sing — what else? — Puccini's "Nessun dorma."

Bocelli, 58, is one of the most famous classical music performers of his generation. With over 80 million albums sold, he's become a crossover sensation among listeners who don't typically tune in to a lot of opera. A lifelong resident of Italy, Bocelli was completely blinded at age 12 when a soccer accident exacerbated his congenital glaucoma. (An unsuccessful treatment with leeches could make for an interesting scene in the movie.)

Fame as a singer came in Bocelli's 30s, when he impressed Luciano Pavarotti and ultimately recorded a hit duet with the legendary singer. His recognition across Europe grew throughout the 1990s, and his 1995 duet with Sarah Brightman, "Time to Say Goodbye," became one of the best-selling singles of all time.

By 1998 the tenor's renown was such that the day after making his U.S. debut, he was invited to the White House to meet President Clinton. His good looks didn't hurt: that same year, Bocelli was named one of People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People.

No release date has yet been announced for The Music of Silence, which will include previously-unheard songs that Bocelli wrote in his youth.
