In 1987, a very popular coming of age war film opened that was based on a semi-autobiographical novel by J.G. Ballard.
It's called Empire of the Sun, and it stars Christian Bale, John Malkovich, Miranda Richardson, and Nigel Havers. The film tells the story of Jim Graham — a boy growing up during World War II who goes from living in a wealthy British family in Shanghai, to becoming a prisoner of war in a Japanese internment camp.
Steven Spielberg was the director, and he went to frequent collaborator John Williams to create the score. On this week's Flicks in Five, we'll hear some of Williams's music from the film.
