Join Music is Music host Ria Misra on a musical trip that will take you to fly around the cosmos with the International Space Orchestra; to spend an afternoon with Vijay Iyer at his childhood piano; to meet-up with a mysterious, new classical composer (who also happens to be a computer); and much, much more.

Season 2:

Episode 1 - Music in Space, Part I

We know what our planet looks like from above, but what might our planet sound like from afar? That's the question that drives the heart of the song Earth 812 and--besides being a beautiful piece of music--it's also a pretty impressive piece of science. Composer Arthur Jeffes joins the Music is Music podcast for an exploration of music in space.

Episode 2 - Music in Space, Part II

The International Space Orchestra is a band that features astronauts, space scientists, and NASA flight directors all huddled around the same piece of music. ISO founder Nelly Ben Hayoun and NASA flight director (and ISO saxophonist) Rusty Hunt join Music is Music to conclude its journey into music in space.

Episode 3 - At Home with Vijay Iyer

Music is Music comes to you from Harlem this week. Host Ria Misra is visiting Vijay Iyer at his home to talk about the secret life of instruments, the art of improvisation, and also just to hear him play some really beautiful music.

Episode 4 - The Hang Drum

Listening to Manu Delago play music, you might think you hear him play a harp, a steel drum, a tabla, and bells--but all those different instruments are in fact one hybrid instrument: the hang drum. Delago visited Music is Music in New York to talk about the process of mastering an instrument so new that many people encounter it for the first time through his music.

Episode 5 - Listening to Everything

Ben Lukas Boysen and Sebastian Plano are the composers behind the sweeping musical landscape of the new videogame, Everything, a game which lets players become everything from an elk to a strip of bacon to a planet. Boysen and Plano join host Ria Misra for a conversation about games, music, and what they mean.

Episode 6 - Who Is Emily Howell?

You can find Emily Howell's music all over the internet, but a search for Emily Howell the person comes up empty. She plays no concerts, attends no events, has no email address, and not a single photo comes up under a google search. The reason? Emily Howell is a computer program. The creator of the Emily Howell program, composer David Cope joins Ria Misra for a conversation about music, technology, and the future.
