Composed at the end of the 18th century when Haydn himself was approaching 70, the Opus 76 set of string quartets are the composer's summation in the genre. The third in the group of six quartets is both playful (C Major) and intense (occasionally moving into C-minor territory). It also includes the melody that would become the Imperial (national) anthem, a melody that was one of Haydn's proudest achievements.
The Fry Street Quartet opened their Chamber Music Society of St Cloud performance with a vigorous reading of this quintessential Haydn work. Their performance is in this week's Regional Spotlight.
