Flicks in Five: The Piano

Flicks in Five: The Piano

Hollywood likes to boast, sometimes a little falsely, that it's ahead of the game in human rights, equal rights, and other social justice topics. Jane Campion directed The Piano and is the second of four women ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director. You can't blame it all on Hollywood though, she's also the only female filmmaker in history to win the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival in France. Campion is a native New Zealander who began her filmmaking career in her early 20's. She wrote numerous short films, but her big break came after she wrote and directed The Piano. Campion's films are often about gender inequality and female power. The Piano is about a mute piano player and her daughter and her efforts to regain her piano after it is sold. The film won three of the eight Academy Awards it was nominated for. The film is enhanced by a score written by Michael Nyman.
