Moveable Feast: Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Moveable Feast: Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Here in Minnesota, we only have one national park, Voyageurs National Park, but the U.S. National Parks are such treasures they're worth a drive.

One of Minnesota Monthly's writers, David Mahoney, recently went to Theodore Roosevelt National Park in west-central North Dakota, where he found so much beautiful scenery and wildlife.

It's a little ironic that Theodore Roosevelt originally went to North Dakota to hunt, but after visiting the region, Roosevelt became a big conservationist and helped preserve the area from development.

At Theodore Roosevelt National Park, there are the stark, otherworldly layered rock formations known as "the badlands," as well as petrified forests. When hiking, visitors can see several prairie dog towns as well as herds of wild horses. But the most majestic animals to see are the bison, magnificent 2,000-pound beasts roaming the prairie.
